Help Raise $100,000 for the National Park Foundation
— Thomas Cole,
painter
Perched on the coast of Maine, Acadia National Park encompasses much of Mount Desert Island and portions of Isle au Haut and the Schoodic Peninsula. Its 70 square miles include mountains, forests, lakes, meadows, sandy beaches and boulder-strewn shores.
An Extraordinary Setting
Visiting Acadia National Park, established in 1919, is like walking into a painting by Thomas Cole or Frederic Edwin Church, artists who captured the landscape on canvas. In addition to marveling at the rocky headlands, deep blue harbors and miles of dramatic coastline, visitors can take in arresting forest views from the 45 miles of carriage roads weaving through Mount Desert Island’s interior. The roads were a gift of John D. Rockefeller Jr.
Most Famous Feature
Cadillac Mountain, the tallest mountain on the East Coast. At 1,530 feet, its summit is one of the first places in the U.S. to see the sunrise.
Best-Kept Secret
Thunder Hole, a hollow granite inlet on the southeastern coast of Mount Desert Island, resounds like a thunderclap when waves pound into it.
