“It’s one of the most beautiful places in our country, extremely valuable to those who live near it, and who appreciate the quiet and seclusion and the beauty and the value of this river.”

Winding from Atlanta to Lake Sidney Lanier, Ga., this 48-mile stretch of land along the Chattahoochee River has an abundance of Civil War–era mills, houses, covered bridges and other historic structures.

An Extraordinary Setting

Slow-flowing channels, rocky shoals, turgid rapids, gushing waterfalls — all define the majestic Chattahoochee River, which runs nearly the length of Georgia. The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, a small preserve north of Atlanta that was created in 1978, includes not only protected water areas but also ravine forests, bluffs and wetlands.

Most Famous Feature

Located on a dramatic bend in the river, the Cochran Shoals area includes a scenic, three-mile trail that’s popular with fitness buffs, bird-watchers and those interested in wetlands exploration.

Best-Kept Secret

Visitors to Chattahoochee National Recreation Area love to “shoot the hooch.” The term means to float downriver in a raft. Nearly 3 million people come every year to take advantage of the outdoor recreation opportunities along the river.
