“There are no other Everglades in the world. They are, they always have been, one of the unique regions of the earth; remote, never wholly known. Nothing anywhere else is like them.”

Everglades National Park

Covering 1.5 million acres, Everglades National Park is the largest subtropical wilderness in the U.S. Its low-lying system of almost imperceptibly moving rivers is home to 36 threatened or protected species, including the Florida panther and the American crocodile.

An Extraordinary Setting

Established in 1947, Everglades National Park has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an International Biosphere Reserve and a Wetland of International Importance. Perhaps best known for its freshwater sloughs covered with sea grass, the sweeping, sun-drenched expanse also has hardwood hammocks, pine groves, cypress domes and the largest mangrove system in the Western Hemisphere. Egrets, herons, pelicans and ibis can be seen swooping through the sky, and an abundance of crustaceans, mollusks, sharks, stingrays and barracudas flourish in the park’s waters.

Most Famous Feature

American alligators and American crocodiles have become almost synonymous with the Everglades.

Best-Kept Secret

Everglades National Park covers only the southern fifth of the everglades ecosystem.
